Feeding aquarium fish: choose the right form and a measured portion

Feeding time is a useful opportunity to watch your aquarium. Which animals appear, where do they eat and who seems to miss out? Start with these observations before buying a larger container or another food.

Let the inhabitants determine the menu

Research each species’ dietary needs. Feeding position and mouth size matter when selecting food. Overfeeding can impair water quality. The RSPCA provides general feeding guidance, emphasising appropriate diets and avoiding excessive feeding.

Compare more than the packaging

Read whether a product is complete or complementary food, which animals it is intended for and the manufacturer's feeding guidance. Check particle size against your animals. If unsure, ask for advice for the exact species; “tropical fish” is a broad description.

Flakes, pellets and wafers describe forms, not a guarantee that the ingredients suit every inhabitant. Record the product name and variant in your journal. This helps you find the same version later and avoid accidentally ordering a different size or formulation.

Make the portion clear

Use a consistent measuring method and follow species and product guidance. Observe whether the food is eaten and remove leftovers where needed. A checklist is useful when several people care for the tank: it prevents everyone assuming the animals have not yet been fed.

A useful feeding sheet

• Which species receives which food?
• How is the agreed quantity measured?
• Who feeds and where is it recorded?
• What is the expiry date and recommended storage?

Prepare the same information for a holiday carer. Instead of vague instructions such as “a generous pinch”, discuss and demonstrate the agreed method. If an animal does not eat, adding more food is not the answer: record observations and seek knowledgeable advice if the problem continues.
